How This Research Is Produced
60-second overview: VMCcerts monitors all major public Certificate Transparency logs, captures every BIMI certificate (VMC and CMC) at issuance, runs deterministic computation scripts, and publishes aggregated results via a token engine. No survey data. No modelling. Source: the public CT log record.

📡 Data Collection
Certificate Transparency log monitoring across all major public logs: Google Argon, Google Xenon, Cloudflare Nimbus, DigiCert Nessie, Let's Encrypt Oak, Sectigo Sabre. VMC and CMC certificates captured at issuance.
📅 Research Period
2021 through 2026-07-02. All BIMI certificates logged during this period are included. Dataset is updated periodically; each update carries a unique version slug.
🏭 Industry Classification
Priority-ranked keyword matching on the Company Description field. 11 verticals. First matching rule wins. Confidence: moderate — automated, not manually verified. Unclassified: 21.5%.
🌍 Country Attribution
ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 Country field from CT log data. High confidence — explicit field, not inferred. Represents certificate registration country, not necessarily deployment geography.
🏛️ CA Attribution
Intermediate CA field from CT log data. Normalised to five canonical CA slugs: DigiCert, GlobalSign, Sectigo, Entrust, SSL Corp. High confidence — CA is explicit in the CT log record.
⚠️ Known Limitations
Only publicly logged certificates are captured. Certificates not submitted to CT logs are not represented. Company Description field quality varies by issuer. Industry classification is automated and may misclassify edge cases.
✅ Verification
All metrics computed deterministically from raw dataset using versioned scripts. Independent re-computation performed before each publication. Results cross-checked against prior dataset versions for consistency.
🔧 Token Engine
All statistics in published reports render via VMCC Token Engine server-side replacement. No values are hardcoded in HTML. Every statistic is traceable to a computed token key derived from the dataset.

Research Data Governance
VMCcerts publishes aggregated, verified statistics derived from public CT log data. The governance model below defines what data is published openly, what is available on request, and what is held under internal research governance.
Data Governance Policy
Aggregated research statistics — country totals, industry benchmarks, CA market share, and enterprise metrics — are published openly on this platform. Underlying records are governed under a tiered access model: journalists, academic researchers, and qualified partners may request aggregated source datasets; raw CT log data, individual certificate records, and internal classification rules are held under research governance and are not distributed.
All published figures are computed deterministically from the dataset, aggregated at the country, industry, CA, or enterprise level, and verified before publication. Individual organisations are not identified in any published output.
