Trademark & Logo Center

Will My Logo Qualify for BIMI?

VMC issuance depends on your trademark status and your logo's compliance with CA validation requirements. This hub covers eligibility, approval criteria, and how to diagnose a rejection.

The short answer

Your logo qualifies for a VMC if you have an active registered trademark from a recognized office (USPTO, EUIPO, IPO, or equivalent), your logo visually matches the registered mark, the SVG meets SVG Tiny PS format requirements, and the applicant can demonstrate a valid relationship to the trademark holder. If your trademark is pending, a CMC may be available as an alternative.

What is your trademark situation?

Active registered trademark

You are eligible for a VMC. Check logo compliance and the applicant–owner relationship before applying.

Which registrations qualify

Pending

Trademark application in progress

Pending applications do not qualify for a VMC. A CMC may be available while your registration completes.

Pending trademark options

No Trademark

No trademark registration

A VMC is not available without a registered trademark. Check CMC eligibility as an alternative path.

Quick Answers

Does my logo need to exactly match my trademark?
Your BIMI logo must visually match the registered trademark on file. The CA compares the SVG to the trademark registration. Rebrands and redesigns that haven't been re-registered will fail.

Can I get a VMC if we don't own the trademark?
Yes, with a valid relationship to the trademark holder — parent/subsidiary ownership, licensing, or documented authorized use. Third-party relationships need supporting documentation prepared before submitting.

My trademark is pending. What are my options?
A pending application does not qualify for a VMC. Pursue a CMC as an interim path, or wait for registration to complete. See Pending trademark options.

Why was my logo rejected by the CA?
Rejections are: visual mismatch (SVG doesn't match registered mark), SVG format failure (not SVG Tiny PS compliant), or missing required elements. The CA rejection notice identifies the category. See Logo rejection diagnosis.

What happens to my VMC when my brand changes?
A VMC is not automatically updated when your trademark or logo changes. Notify the CA. A significant logo change requires a new VMC application. An outdated VMC will stop BIMI display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my trademark need to be registered before I apply for a VMC?

Yes. A VMC requires a registered trademark — not a pending application. The trademark must be active and registered at the time of application. Acceptable registries include the USPTO, EUIPO, and equivalents in other major jurisdictions. See Which Trademark Registrations Qualify for a VMC.

Can I get BIMI while my trademark registration is still pending?

Not with a VMC. A pending trademark does not qualify. A CMC (Common Mark Certificate) does not require a registered trademark and can be used as an interim solution. See My Trademark Is Pending. Can I Still Get BIMI.

Does the trademark holder need to be the same entity as the VMC applicant?

The VMC applicant must have legal authorization to use the trademark. If the trademark is held by a parent company or third party, written authorization is typically required. See Does the Trademark Owner Need to Match the VMC Applicant.
