BIMI Operations Center

Managing Your Existing BIMI Deployment

Once BIMI is live, it requires ongoing maintenance — certificate renewal before expiry, revalidation when things change, and decisions about provider switching or rebranding. This hub covers everything that happens after deployment.

The key things to stay on top of

VMC certificates have a fixed validity period — when they expire, logo display stops immediately with no grace period. Begin renewal before expiry. If your trademark or logo changes, the CA must be notified and a new certificate will likely be required. To switch VMC providers, a new application is required — certificates cannot be transferred between CAs.

Quick Answers

What happens when a VMC certificate expires?
BIMI logo display stops immediately — no grace period, no warning notification. Email deliverability is unaffected. Start renewal at least 30 days before expiry; 45–60 days is safer given VMC issuance typically takes 5–15 business days.

Do I need to revalidate my trademark during renewal?
Renewal is streamlined when trademark and logo are unchanged — the CA confirms status and re-issues. If your trademark has lapsed or your logo has changed, full revalidation is required, which takes as long as the original application. Confirm trademark status before initiating renewal.

Can I switch VMC providers without losing BIMI?
You can switch, but certificates cannot be transferred. A new application must be submitted with the new CA and the certificate issued before you update your BIMI DNS record. The BIMI DNS record and SVG logo do not need to change — only the certificate URL is updated.

How far in advance should I start VMC renewal?
Start at least 30 days before expiry. With standard VMC issuance taking 5–15 business days, 30 days provides a reasonable buffer. Setting a calendar reminder at 60 days out gives time to confirm trademark status and gather documentation before the clock tightens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when a VMC certificate expires?

When a VMC expires, BIMI logo display stops immediately for receiving providers that validate the certificate. There is no grace period. Renewal must begin before expiry to maintain uninterrupted display. Certificate expiry does not affect email deliverability — only logo display in supported clients. See VMC Certificate Expiry.

Do I need to revalidate my trademark during VMC renewal?

VMC renewal is streamlined when your trademark status and logo are unchanged. If your trademark has lapsed, changed, or your logo has been updated, full revalidation is required. See Do I Need Revalidation During VMC Renewal.

Can I switch VMC providers without losing my BIMI setup?

Switching VMC providers requires a new certificate application through the new provider. Existing VMC certificates cannot be transferred. Your BIMI DNS record must be updated to point to the new certificate URL after the new VMC is issued. The BIMI DNS record itself and your hosted SVG logo do not change. See Can I Switch VMC Providers.
